ISIE announces creation of 27 independent local electoral commissions

The Independent High Authority for Elections (ISIE) announced on Tuesday the establishment of 27 Independent local election authorities (IRIE). Each IRIE will assist the ISIE Board in the organisation of local council elections and the drawing of lots for candidates with disabilities. The ISIE has also defined the territorial boundaries for each IRIE created. It has also drawn up a table showing the names of the governorates of the local authorities, the corresponding local councils and the number of local electoral districts. At the candidate registration centres for the local elections in different regions of the country, 4,808 candidates submitted their documents last Monday, reflecting a surge in candidacies. In fact, there was an increase of 1,124 candidacies registered on the same day, compared to the count up to October 29, which stood at 3,684. According to data published by the ISIE on Tuesday, there are 4,210 direct candidacies and 598 candidates with disabilities who are participating in the elections through a draw system. Candidate registration for the local elections began on October 23 in 27 centres and will continue until November 1. The first round of these elections is scheduled for December 24.
