João Lourenço Highlights Rail Transport Significance for Africa’s Economic Integration

Dodoma:Angola's Head of State, João Lourenço, emphasized the crucial role of rail transport in fostering economic integration and development across Africa. He made these remarks during a train journey to Dodoma, Tanzania's political and administrative capital. The visit to Dodoma was part of his state visit to Tanzania, where he attended the inauguration of the Mtumba Government City.

According to Angola Press News Agency, Lourenço highlighted the importance of rail travel, not only for its scenic value but to underscore its vital function in connecting African cities and enhancing regional cooperation. He was accompanied by Tanzania's President, Samia Suluhu Hassan, as they discussed the potential connection between the Lobito railway corridor in Angola and Tanzania's Dar es Salaam corridor. This prospective project aims to establish a logistical link between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.

Lourenço noted that such a connection could benefit Angola, Tanzania, and other African nations by facilitating goods transport, boosting trade, and reducing costs and transit times for international commerce. The project could serve as an alternative to the current maritime routes around the Cape of Good Hope, offering ports at Dar es Salaam and Lobito as strategic transshipment points.

Additionally, Lourenço expressed confidence in the initiative's implementation, highlighting its potential to boost economic activity and create opportunities for local populations. The visit marks a continued effort to strengthen friendships and cooperation between Angola and Tanzania.

Dodoma's development as Tanzania's capital since 1973 has involved significant infrastructure projects, including the Mtumba Government City. The inauguration of this complex, consisting of 37 permanent buildings for ministries and institutions, marks a significant milestone in relocating government functions from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma. This initiative aims to enhance government efficiency and service delivery.

João Lourenço's visit concluded on the second day of his state trip to Tanzania, reflecting ongoing efforts to deepen bilateral relations between the two countries.
