Local elections: transfer of sensitive electoral materials to regional sections gets underway

The transfer of sensitive election materials from the warehouse of the election commission in El Ouardia, Tunis, to regional sections started Friday as part of the logistical preparations for December 24 local elections.

President of the Independent High Authority for Elections (French: ISIE) Farouk Bouasker told reporters the election material will be stored in regional chapters across the country after the verification of its reliability.

Then, the election materials will be distributed before election silence to all polling stations and centres.

The transfer and distribution of election material will be handled by military and police personnel, he added. This includes ballot boxes and papers, sample minutes of vote and ballot counting in addition to IT systems and l’encre électoral.

The successful conduct of polling hinges on the effective distribution of election material after thorough inspection, considering the significant number of constituencies -over 2,000 – and ballot papers in each election d
istrict.

The number of eligible voters exceeds 9 million, said Bouasker. More than 5,000 polling centres and 8,000 polling stations were set up. About 35,000 teams, including presiding officers and staff members, were mobilised.

Neither serious offences or hate speech were reported so far in campaining underway until December 22.

Eighteen complaints were filed with the public prosecutor in Tunis and some regions against social media profile pages which spread messages of hatred and violence and rumors to undermine the election process and harm the image of candidates.
