MP Calls for Increased Fertilizer Supply to Boost Agricultural Production in Huambo.

Huambo: The coordinator of the Support Office for Members of the Parliament (MPs) of the Constituency of Huambo, Armando Capunda, has urged the Executive to ensure a greater supply of fertilizers to peasant families to enhance agricultural production. This call was made during a press briefing following a regimental meeting with the governor of Huambo province, Pereira Alfredo, where the action program for the III Session of the V Legislature of the National Assembly was presented, alongside discussions on the main projects included in the General State Budget (OGE/2025).

According to Angola Press News Agency, Armando Capunda emphasized that the primary concern of the population is social, focusing on hunger and poverty. He asserted that government programs, particularly in agriculture, need to aim at bolstering domestic production. Capunda highlighted the necessity for the government to provide essential inputs and reduce fertilizer prices, given that the population in Huambo is predominantly agricultural.

C
apunda stressed that combating hunger and reducing poverty must occur through the agricultural sector. Most peasants in the region cultivate crops like sweet potatoes, reindeer, corn, and cassava, which are vital for the community’s food security. He expressed optimism that with lower fertilizer prices and support for peasant associations and cooperatives, it would be feasible to alleviate hunger and poverty in the short or medium term.

Capunda also expressed satisfaction with his meeting with Governor Pereira Alfredo, noting the emergency program of the Government of Huambo province, which includes initiatives to address energy, water, and infrastructure concerns. He advocated for better housing accessibility for citizens, suggesting solutions such as directed self-construction on well-structured land to prevent unplanned settlements.

Governor Pereira Alfredo stated that the meeting aimed to discuss development strategies for the Central Plateau region and inform MPs about upcoming actions planned for the
2025 financial year. He highlighted the Government’s emergency program, which will initiate this year, focusing on basic sanitation, public lighting, and urban and peri-urban area improvements in Caála, Huambo, and Bailundo.

The 2025 General State Budget for Huambo province projects a total of 229 billion, 271 million, 961 thousand, and 382 Kwanzas, reflecting a 41.29 percent increase compared to the 2024 fiscal year.
