Nancy Chelangat Delivers A Gold Medal At World Para Athletics Championships

Kericho’s Paralympian Nancy Chelangat Koech flew the county’s flag high by scooping a gold medal after winning the Women’s 1,500 meters T11 race in a time of 4:46.55.

Chelangat participated in T11 Category used by the World Para Athletics Championships to classify para-athletes with visual impairments in the second-largest disability sporting event in the world.

The Para-Athletics team which comprised ten participants from Kericho County received an electrifying welcome back to the country after an outstanding performance at the World Para Athletics Championships at Charlety Stadium in Paris, France from July 8 to 17

Kericho County Chief Officer in charge of Sports Mr. Geoffrey Bett who received the team at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport announced that the County government will hold a grand homecoming ceremony in honour of the para-athletes.

‘This team has made us proud as a County and we must celebrate them and honour them for their outstanding performances,’ said Bett

The unique talents team staged an exhilarating series of athletic feats in the Paralympic track and field organized by the World Para Athletics subcommittee of the International Paralympic Committee.

The World Para Athletics Championships is the second most important sporting event in the disabled sports calendar after the Paralympic Games and is held every two years with this year’s tournament bringing together 1,330 athletes from 107 nations.
