Luanda: The National Electricity Transmission Network (RNT) launched a community awareness campaign on Wednesday in the provinces of Huambo and Bie to protect power lines. The campaign, called 'Ohele,' which means 'Danger' in Umbundu, aims to raise awareness about the dangers of power lines.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the general coordinator of the RNT awareness campaign, Feliciano Samba, stated that the initiative is a response to the increasing acts of vandalism, uncontrolled fires, excavations near the bases of towers, and theft of components. These activities have led to the collapse of towers and subsequent power outages.
Samba highlighted that the program was established to safeguard the country's strategic infrastructure and maintain the stability of the national electricity system. The campaign seeks to involve communities directly in the preservation of the transmission lines.
He further explained that the campaign is designed to counteract behaviors that pose risks to human lives and disrupt the regular functioning of critical services, such as hospitals, public institutions, and production units.
Samba also warned about the consequences of the recent collapse of two 220 kV towers in Huambo province, which impacted families and disrupted the power supply in several areas.
'We intend for each person to be a true guardian of these infrastructures. Whoever destroys what belongs to everyone is harming everyone's future,' he emphasized.
RNT is an Angolan public company responsible for the management, operation, maintenance, and expansion of the high-voltage electricity transmission network across Angola.
