Luanda:Pedro Maria Tonha Pedalé General Army Hospital Complex: The hospital treated 10,922 patients during its first year of operations, as announced by director-general Albano Eugenio. This milestone signifies a substantial enhancement in Angola's specialized healthcare services. According to Angola Press News Agency, the facility conducted 11,879 clinical consultations, 1,002 surgeries, 1,471 inpatient admissions, and 58,256 laboratory tests during its initial year. These figures highlight the hospital's impact on individual patients and their families through comprehensive care. The hospital is equipped with advanced medical technology, including a 3-Tesla MRI scanner, a 128-slice dual-source CT scanner, and a hybrid operating theater for complex diagnoses and treatments. Key specialized services introduced include an acute stroke response unit known as the "Stroke Green Pathway" and an interventional neuroradiology program addressing complex neurovascular conditions. Training local health professionals is emphasized to maintain technical expertise within Angola, enabling national specialists to independently conduct advanced procedures in the future, according to Eugenio. Secretary of State for Health Leonardo Inocencio noted that the hospital's operations saved the government over 3.4 million US dollars by reducing the necessity to send patients abroad for specialized care. The savings are intended for reinvestment in other national health priorities. The hospital's integrated trauma response network features an emergency department, a helipad, surgical suites, intensive care units, and neuro-intensive care facilities. Furthermore, 38,000 health workers have been trained nationally, with 157 medical residents currently in specialty training at the Pedalé complex. Looking forward, plans are underway to introduce radiotherapy, organ transplants, parathyroid surgeries, and expanded nuclear medicine services. The hospital's inaugural scientific conference, themed "A Year Transforming Angolan Health," focuse s on scientific research, clinical knowledge exchange, and medical innovation.
