Luanda: Pope Leo XIV learned on Sunday about the construction of the Basilica of Our Lady of Muxima and the town's redevelopment works. On location, the Holy Father was briefed by the director of the Office of Special Works, Leonel Cruz, with the Minister of State for Social Affairs, Maria do Rosário Bragança, the Minister of Culture, Filipe Zau, and local governor, Auzilio Jacob, among other officials present. According to Angola Press News Agency, Pope Leo XIV was informed that the construction is already 70% complete. The project, located in Quissama, 130 km from Luanda, includes a Basilica with a seating capacity of 4,600 and a plaza for pilgrims. The plan also involves the requalification of the village and the Fort, with completion estimated 36 months after the initial groundbreaking. The Basilica aims to become a significant Marian center in Sub-Saharan Africa, accommodating thousands of pilgrims in the adjacent plaza. In addition to the Basilica, the redevelopment project encompasses the improvement of sanitation, water, and energy infrastructure, as well as the establishment of a medical center, administration buildings, and the relocation of local residents. The site will also feature a parking lot for 1,117 vehicles and buildings to support clergy and provide residences. The Muxima sanctuary, being the largest Catholic pilgrimage site in Angola, seeks to enhance its facilities to better serve the influx of pilgrims.
