President Joo Louren§o Leads 8th Decoration Ceremony

Luanda: Head of State, Joo Louren§o, will award this Thursday in Luanda, the commemorative medal of honor for the 50th anniversary of National Independence to the former Head of State, Jos© Eduardo dos Santos, and to several foreign personalities who contributed to the liberation, peace and development of Angola.

According to Angola Press News Agency, among those decorated in the Honor Category, in addition to former President Jos© Eduardo dos Santos, are African, European, Asian, and American leaders who stood out for their solidarity and diplomatic role during the national liberation struggle and in the post-independence reconstruction process. Notable figures include Nelson Mandela from South Africa, Fidel Castro from Cuba, and Bill Clinton from the USA, among others.

In the Independence Category, medals will be awarded to figures who directly participated in the liberation struggle and the Alvor Agreement, such as Ant³nio Agostinho Neto, lvaro Holden Roberto, and Jonas Malheiro Savimbi, as well as other Angolan nationalists, diplomats, combatants, and foreigners.

The Peace and Development Category will honor individuals and institutions that have contributed to national reconciliation and development in Angola over the past decades. Among them are Ant´nio Domingos Pitra Neto, for his contribution to strengthening democratic institutions, and Kofi Annan, former Secretary-General of the United Nations, whose work was decisive in the peace process and national reconstruction.

These distinctions, which in this eighth phase encompass 188 personalities, represent a gesture of recognition and gratitude from the Angolan nation to all those who, inside and outside the country, fought for the freedom, peace, and dignity of the Angolan people. Since the beginning of the process in April 2025, the awards program has already recognized 4,508 personalities, both national and foreign, in seven previous phases.
