The need for final decision on many cases was the focus of a meeting between President Kais Saied and Justice Minister Leila Jaffel at the Carthage Palace on Monday.
The meeting covered a range of issues, with particular emphasis on “the need for a final decision, within a reasonable timeframe, on various cases that have dragged on for more than a decade, plagued by flimsy excuses,” according to a presidency statement.
The persistent delay is exemplified by cases such as the assassinations of Chokri Belaid and Mohamed Brahmi, as well as others related to “the killing of several of our brave soldiers in July 2013 and various crimes that have yet to reach the appeal stage, only to continue for another decade if challenged or appealed.”
The President was quoted as saying that “the Tunisian people have the right to know the truth and it is their right to hold accountable anyone who has committed crimes against them, whether before or after December 17, 2010.”
The meeting also discussed the draft law amending
Article 411 of the Commercial Code. It also examined the revision of the decree on criminal reconciliation in the shortest possible time, since the aim of reconciliation is to recover the people’s money. “Anyone involved in such reconciliation will be free to resume their activities within the framework of the law,” the same statement said.
