President Kaïs Saïed met Prime Minister Ahmed Hachani, Justice Minister Leila Jaffel and Finance Minister Sihem Nemsia at the Carthage Palace.
The meeting focused on the revision of the penal reconciliation decree law and the amendment of certain articles of the penal code and the commercial code.
In a video posted by the Presidency, President Saïed said that besides the revision of the penal reconciliation decree, the amendment of article 96 of the Penal Code, which refers to “those who take advantage of their position to gain an unfair advantage or cause damage to the administration”, would also be discussed.
That article was used by many as a pretext “to evade their responsibilities”, he said.
The Head of State added that the meeting would also discuss the amendment to Article 411 of the Commercial Code, which has just been finalised and will be examined by the Cabinet meeting in the next few days.
In this context, he pointed out that this article, which deals with bounced cheques, was drawn up in 19
77 in the context of the rise of liberalism, in order to allow banks to evade their responsibilities.
President Saïd also reaffirmed that he had “waged a war against the corrupt, who to this day hide behind lobbies and people acting through certain media and civil society organisations.»
The Head of State also pointed out that every day he receives dozens of cases of corruption in all sectors.
These complaints and petitions addressed to the Presidency of the Republic show that local and regional officials are not fulfilling their responsibilities, he regretted.
In this context, Saïed called on officials involved in corruption to leave their posts before being dismissed.
The President of the Republic also criticised the slowness with which certain cases pending before the courts were examined, despite the existence of sufficient evidence.
“We are in a race against time to write a new history for Tunisia,” he said.
The head of state pointed his finger at those who had previously thrown themselves into th
e arms of foreign parties, claiming to be part of a salvation front.
With regard to the penal reconciliation process, Kaïs Saïed said that those involved in the case must return the Tunisian people’s money in order to leave prison.
