Role of Rural Women in Ensuring Food Security Praised

Cunene province: Georgina Braga, the Director of Social Action, Family, and Gender Equality in Cunene Province, praised on Friday the rural women for their role in sustainable agriculture, food security, and community development. Speaking to ANGOP on International Rural Women's Day, which is celebrated on October 15, Braga said that rural women are not only food producers, but also guardians of the land, family educators, entrepreneurs, community leaders, and supporters of the local economy. According to Angola Press News Agency, Braga emphasized the need to highlight the role of rural women in sustaining and transforming the countryside with their strength, wisdom, and resilience, at a time when the region faces challenges related to climate change. "Many women still face profound challenges such as lack of access to land, credit, technology, and other inequalities that must be overcome step by step," Braga said. She urged women to continue to empower themselves through schooling and technical and vocatio nal training to acquire professional skills and bolster their entrepreneurial spirit. The International Rural Women's Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly to highlight the role and situation of women in rural areas. The date was first celebrated on October 15, 1995, by the Women's World Summit Foundation. The United Nations General Assembly officially adopted the date through resolution 62/138 on December 18, 2007.
