State Minister in Abuja for 50th Anniversary of Murtala Muhammed’s Assassination

Abuja: The Minister of State and Head of the President's Civil Office, Dionisio da Fonseca, has been in Abuja, Nigeria, since Tuesday to represent President Joo Louren§o at the 50th anniversary of the assassination of General Murtala Muhammed.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the Minister of State visited the Angolan Embassy and the former First Lady of Nigeria, Ajoke Murtala Muhammed, the widow of the former Nigerian Head of State, on Wednesday. During his visit, he also met with business groups and the governors of the Nigerian states of Bayelsa and Nasarawa, which have established twinning agreements with the Angolan provinces of Namibe and Bengo.

The Minister of State is scheduled to deliver a speech on Thursday at an international conference themed "Has Africa Come of Age?" The conference aims to revisit the pan-Africanist vision of Murtala Muhammed, focusing on his commitment to the political emancipation of several African countries and examining Africa's current trajectory in global politics.

Murtala Ramat Muhammed, born in 1938, served as a Nigerian military leader and de facto head of state from July 1975 until his assassination in February 1976. Known for his anti-corruption efforts, significant reforms, and decisive leadership, Muhammed governed Nigeria for a brief period of 200 days, leaving a lasting impact on the nation before being killed during a coup attempt.
