Strategic study recommends exploiting green hydrogen and battery trains in rail transport

Exploiting green hydrogen and battery trains in the Tunisian railway networks is among the main recommendations of the strategic study on “the deployment of alternative and clean energies in Tunisian railway transport”, funded by the European Investment Bank (EIB), reads a press release of the Transport Ministry on Tuesday.

According to the study, this would make it possible to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, control operating costs and improve the quality of services. It would also make it possible to better master new technologies in this area and contribute to achieving energy sovereignty given that the targeted transition is based on locally produced energy.

The approach recommended by this study is also consistent with the roadmap set by Tunisian authorities for the development of green hydrogen and renewable energies.

Chairing, Tuesday, the steering committee responsible for monitoring the strategic study on the deployment of alternative and clean energies in Tunisian rail transport, Transport Mini
ster, Rabie Majidi called for exploiting the land reserves available at the port of Zarzis to invest in green hydrogen.

The minister stressed his department’s priority to rail transport which represents a strategic choice for the transportation of people and goods and the rapprochement of regions and economic districts.
