Successful Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeries Transform Lives in Southern Angola

Lubango:More than 30 young patients suffering from congenital foot and hand deformities have undergone successful corrective surgeries in Huila province, local health officials announced. These life-changing procedures were part of a five-day pediatric orthopedic campaign held at the Olga Chaves Municipal Hospital.

According to Angola Press News Agency, a total of 172 children were evaluated by medical teams during the campaign, with 37 patients—ranging from newborns to 15 years old—receiving surgeries to correct clubfoot and other conditions. The campaign, now in its fifth edition, was a collaboration between the Lubango Orthopedic Center and the Olga Chaves Municipal Hospital.

The operations included 32 straightforward interventions and five complex reconstructive procedures. Beyond clubfoot, the medical teams treated congenital conditions like polydactyly and macrodactyly. Patients traveled from various provinces, including Luanda, Huambo, Cunene, and Namibe, to receive specialized care.

The medical team consisted of 22 specialists, including orthopedic surgeons, nurses, physical therapists, anesthesiologists, and surgical technicians. Local professionals worked alongside visiting experts from Luanda and Namibia. Despite infrastructure limitations at the municipal hospital, contingency plans with the Lubango Central Hospital ensured the campaign's success.

Post-operative care will involve medical monitoring, serial casting, and specialized orthopedic footwear. Health authorities emphasize the importance of parents and guardians adhering to clinical guidelines for recovery. Organizers are planning a sixth edition of the campaign, ensuring continued support for young patients.
