Kenya Women Teachers Association (KEWOTA), has taken initiatives to empower practicing and retired members in the profession by leveraging on the digital platform.
Speaking in Kisii town, Kisii County, the KEWOTA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Benta Opande, unveiled a digital platform project where teachers posted questions for picking by peera and students at subsidized fees.
Every, single question uploaded will be charged sh. 5 which will be payed to the teacher. A total of 840 student subscribers had been captured in the platform, revealed the CEO.
According to Opande, an MOU had been signed with stakeholders including Equity Bank to supply laptops to the association’s members to boost the government’s ICT Laboratory project.
Repayment for the laptops will range from 1-96 months, the mode that was of the individual teacher’s choice.
On the impending 20,000 teacher recruitment exercise by the Education ministry, the CEO expressed the association’s concern saying the 113,000-deficit called for bridging.
She, however, thanked the government for the gesture but wanted internship teachers whose contracts expired in February next year be hired on permanent and pensionable terms.
Lydia Moraa, the area association’s representative, decried the suffering the girl-child and retired teachers went through.
The rep assured them of the association’s presence at the grassroot and commitment to alleviate their plight.
