Luanda: The Minister of Telecommunications, Information Technology and Media (MINTICS), Mario de Oliveira, highlighted on Thursday that the sector is carrying out projects to restructure the country's technology infrastructure, including expanding the terrestrial fiber optic network and submarine cables. Speaking at the opening of the IV MINTTICS Consultative Council, the minister highlighted the ongoing work to implement the domestic submarine fiber optic cable, which will connect the main coastal cities, with a particular focus on connecting the Lobito Corridor to international submarine cables, such as Equiano.
According to Angola Press News Agency, Mario de Oliveira added that national and international strategic partnerships are being strengthened to help expand connectivity and technological innovation, and to boost the digital economy. He said that the government's goal is to accelerate economic growth, promote social inclusion, and create concrete opportunities for young people, adding that the Conecta/Angola project, which uses the ANGOSAT 2 satellite, has provided connectivity to remote populations and implemented the National Data Centre. This will facilitate greater data security, ensure digital sovereignty, increase connectivity, and create conditions for sustainable economic growth.
He revealed that Angola currently has more than 28 million mobile subscribers and over 17 million broadband users. According to the minister, digital transformation should result in more jobs, skills, efficient governance, and a better quality of life for citizens. 'We are experiencing a global paradigm shift driven by artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, big data and automation, and this transformation will not leave the country behind,' the minister said.
For two days, the approximately 300 participants at the meeting, which is taking place under the motto 'Digital Transformation at the Service of the Citizen', will discuss the strategic plans of the MINTICS sub-sectors. Alongside the Council, specialized methodological meetings are planned for the telecommunications, information technology, and social communication sub-sectors. These meetings will analyze the methodology for monitoring and reporting the sector's contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP), the national cybersecurity strategy, risk management, and best practices in institutional digital security.
Topics of discussion at the Council will include the operational plan for the Executive's institutional communication, Brazil's experience in this area, digital communication actions focused on harmonizing platforms, political communication and a crisis communication plan, as well as the regulation, supervision and standardization of outdoor advertising.
