Lubango: The Lubango District Court sentenced three individuals, aged 17, 21, and 23, to two years and three months in prison for participating in an armed riot. The summary trial concluded with a verdict on Wednesday, addressing the events surrounding the attempted riot. According to Angola Press News Agency, the charges stemmed from a disturbance on July 29, 2025, at the Mutundo informal market. The accused, along with others who escaped, were involved in actions that disturbed public peace and order. The incident tragically resulted in the death of a 16-year-old and the serious injury of a National Police officer. The court found the defendants guilty as direct participants in the crime, enforcing not only the prison sentence but also a financial penalty. Each was ordered to pay 50,000 kwanzas in court fees and an additional 10,000 kwanzas for their unofficial legal representation. Following the judgment, the convicted individuals were transferred to the Lubango penitentiary. The unrest reportedly follo wed misinformation related to a robbery in the market, which incited a failed attempt to attack local institutions, swiftly contained by the National Police.
