Luanda: The President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, F©lix Tshisekedi, expressed appreciation for the initiatives proposed by his Angolan counterpart, Joo Louren§o, during a recent meeting in Luanda. The discussions centered on strategies to enhance peace and security efforts in the eastern region of the DRC, which continues to grapple with armed conflict.
According to Angola Press News Agency, Tshisekedi acknowledged Louren§o's significant role as both the President of Angola and Chairperson of the African Union, highlighting his leadership in promoting peace initiatives for the DRC. Tshisekedi described Louren§o's proposals as 'very interesting' and expressed hope that they would advance the peace plan in the region, although he refrained from disclosing specific details of the proposals.
The meeting primarily focused on the ongoing security situation in Eastern DRC, an area plagued by persistent warfare. Tshisekedi emphasized the importance of finding political and diplomatic solutions to the conflict, noting that the proposed initiatives aim to complement existing peace processes, such as those in Washington and Doha.
The two leaders reviewed the status of the armed conflict in Eastern DRC and the regional and international efforts underway to bring stability to the area. Their talks included a discussion of the Washington-2025 Accords, a peace agreement signed last December between the DRC and Rwanda, aimed at ending bilateral conflict and ensuring the withdrawal of Rwandan troops from Congolese territory.
Despite these efforts, the situation on the ground remains volatile, with the M23 rebel movement continuing to capture strategic areas, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region. The United States has raised concerns about Rwanda's alleged violations of the Washington Agreement, signaling the possibility of further diplomatic measures if support for armed groups persists.
The meeting between Tshisekedi and Louren§o, held at the Presidential Palace, underscores ongoing diplomatic consultations to stabilize the DRC. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to regional and continental efforts to achieve peace, with Tshisekedi expressing confidence in the proposals and solutions discussed.
