New york: Burkinabe Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouedraogo on Saturday called on UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to “make history” by initiating a profound reform of the organization to restore its credibility and effectiveness. “The UN finds itself today in the same situation as the defunct League of Nations: incapable of imposing its voice, of enforcing its principles and resolutions, of resolving conflicts and of rising to the level of current challenges,” declared Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouedraogo, Saturday at the UN podium.
According to Burkina Information Agency, addressing the Secretary-General directly, the Burkinabe Prime Minister insisted: “You have a great opportunity to make history by taking responsibility for profoundly transforming this organization which, at its creation, had raised so much hope.”
The head of the Burkinabe executive assured Mr. Guterres that “millions of citizens around the world” support him in this mission, despite “various pressures and power games.”
“We kn
ow you are resourceful enough to free the United Nations and place it on a par with our common ambitions,” concluded Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouedraogo, calling for a UN that guarantees international peace and security and not “an instrument of domination in the hands of the strongest of the moment.”
