15 New Industrial Units Under Construction in Benguela Province

Benguela:At least 15 industrial units are currently under construction in the Catumbela Industrial Development Zone (PDIC) in Benguela Province, according to Miguel Etossi Correia, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the PDIC.

According to Angola Press News Agency, Miguel Etossi Correia reported that the PDIC already has 30 industries in operation out of a total of 105 companies established in the zone. Among the new constructions, one unit is scheduled to be inaugurated on November 11, coinciding with the 51st anniversary of National Independence.

Correia noted a growing interest from business groups in investing in the industrial zone, attributing this to the development of the Lobito Corridor, which has boosted industrial growth and made the region more appealing for new projects. Investors are actively seeking plots for establishing factories, and a project for infrastructure development in the zone is in preparation. There are plans for work to begin in the first phase, with further development in the Biópio area slated for a later stage.

The Chairman emphasized that improving infrastructure is a priority due to increasing business interest and the need to provide suitable conditions for industrial operations. However, he raised concerns about unauthorized land occupation within the PDIC, which hinders growth and expansion. The zone, spanning 2,000 hectares, is divided into plots for industrial projects, but has not yet been physically demarcated.

Correia warned that unauthorized land occupation could limit the availability of plots for industrial activities and complicate securing financing for expansion. He explained that land allocated to the Angolan Industrial Development Institute (IDIA) is a public asset, and unauthorized use represents a loss of these assets and reduces opportunities for new factories.

The project's second phase in Biópio remains on hold due to financing constraints from Saudi Arabia. The administration is awaiting resolution of these issues to resume work, with plans to engage a consultancy firm for necessary procedures.

Currently, the PDIC employs approximately 3,800 workers. Correia mentioned that the administration performs an annual review of statistical indicators, including employment numbers, to monitor industrial activity and its impact on job creation. He anticipates an increase in the workforce by year-end as new industrial units become operational.
