Angola Participates in IMF Borrowers’ Platform Meeting in Bangkok

Bangkok:Secretary of State for Finance and the Treasury Ottoniel dos Santos attended the first meeting of the Governing Council of the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) Borrowers' Platform in Bangkok, Thailand, on Monday.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the inaugural meeting took place at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok, coinciding with the Annual Meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. The meeting aimed to confirm the membership of the Borrowers' Platform and adopt its founding document, outlining its operating and governance arrangements.

The event also included the election of the first chair of the Borrowers' Platform's Governing Council, the establishment of common priorities, and the approval of a joint statement on sovereign debt and development financing. The Borrowers' Platform, launched on 15 April 2026 in Washington, DC, is an initiative for developing countries that seek external financing, intending to enhance cooperation, share knowledge on debt management, and increase participation in international financial discussions.

The Annual Meetings of the WB and IMF, running from 12 to 18 October under the theme 'Thailand's New Horizons Empowering People, Building Resilience', provide Angola with a chance to deepen institutional dialogue with the WB, IMF, and other development partners. This participation allows Angola to engage in discussions on global economic developments and present the priorities of developing countries regarding financing and international cooperation.

The 82nd edition of the event sees an Angolan delegation led by Secretary of State for Planning Luís Epalanga. The delegation includes the Governor of the National Bank of Angola, Manuel Tiago Dias; Secretary of State for Finance and the Treasury, Ottoniel dos Santos; and Secretary of State for Civil Aviation, Maritime and Port Sectors, Adilson Catala, along with officials from these ministerial departments. The Annual Meetings primarily aim to gather finance ministers, central bank governors, policymakers, and civil society representatives to address major global economic challenges.
