Angola Participates in IMF Borrowers’ Platform Governing Council Meeting

Bangkok:Secretary of State for Finance and the Treasury Ottoniel dos Santos attended the inaugural meeting of the Governing Council of the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) Borrowers' Platform in Bangkok, Thailand.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the meeting took place at the United Nations Conference Centre and coincided with the Annual Meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. The purpose of the meeting was to confirm the membership of the Borrowers' Platform and adopt its founding document, which outlines its operational and governance structures.

The event was also significant for electing the first chair of the Borrowers' Platform's Governing Council, setting shared priorities, and approving a joint statement on sovereign debt and development financing. The Borrowers' Platform, established on April 15, 2026, in Washington, DC, is designed to enhance collaboration among developing countries that depend on external financing, improve debt management knowledge sharing, and boost participation in international financial discussions.

The Annual Meetings of the World Bank and IMF, running from October 12 to 18 under the theme 'Thailand's New Horizons Empowering People, Building Resilience', offer Angola an opportunity to engage in institutional dialogue with the World Bank, IMF, and other development partners. The meetings also allow Angola to contribute to discussions on global economic developments and present the priorities of developing countries concerning financing and international cooperation.

Angola's delegation to the 82nd edition of the event is led by Secretary of State for Planning Luís Epalanga and includes key figures such as the Governor of the National Bank of Angola, Manuel Tiago Dias; Secretary of State for Finance and the Treasury, Ottoniel dos Santos; and Secretary of State for Civil Aviation, Maritime and Port Sectors, Adilson Catala, along with officials from relevant ministerial departments. The Annual Meetings aim to convene finance ministers, central bank governors, policymakers, and civil society representatives to address major global economic challenges.
