Luanda: At least 19 Angolan citizens, including an IT technician from a bank, were arrested in Luanda on Monday for allegedly embezzling 1 billion kwanzas, according to the Department of Investigation and Criminal Offenses (DIIP).
According to Angola Press News Agency, DIIP spokesperson Quintino Ferreira informed the media that the funds were fraudulently withdrawn from the institution where the IT technician worked. Ferreira explained that the bank became suspicious of an employee's activities in November 2025, prompting them to file a complaint with the DIIP. This led to the arrest of 18 individuals.
The investigation revealed that the computer engineer spearheaded the operation, distributing the embezzled funds across multiple accounts. Ferreira mentioned that DIIP confiscated two vehicles and a residence in the municipality of Talatona, as they were acquired using the stolen money. Additionally, six employees from a security company were arrested for stealing 1.6 million kwanzas from a cash-in-transit vehicle.
The DIIP also apprehended Eritrean citizens who were fugitives wanted for fraud involving merchandise valued at 70 million kwanzas.
