President increases to seven days national mourning

Luanda – The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, changed from five to seven days the period of national mourning for the death of José Eduardo dos Santos.

The measure is contained in a new presidential decree, produced on Friday night, which revokes the previous one that set a five-day national mourning period.

José Eduardo dos Santos came to power in September 1979, following the death of Angola’s first president, António Agostinho Neto.

He held the office of President of the Republic for 38 years, until September 2017, when he was succeeded by the current Head of State, João Lourenço.

Besides being President of the Republic, he was Commander-in-Chief of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) and President of the MPLA, the party that has ruled the country since the proclamation of national independence on 11 November 1975.

His political record also includes the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs and other functions in the State and in MPLA.

He led the process that culminated with the signing of the Peace Accords, on the 4th April 2002, following the death of the then UNITA founding leader, Jonas Savimbi.

Inspector General highlights actions for promoting public transparency

Huambo – The actions of the General Inspectorate of the State Administration (IGAE) over the last five years have significantly contributed to promoting a culture of transparency and public integrity, in the context of improving the morale of society.

The statement was made by the inspector-general of the State Administration, Sebastião Domingos Gunza, speaking on Friday at the end of the II Consultative Council of IGAE, held in the city of Huambo.

According to Mr. Gunza, the institution carried out several activities that had a positive effect on changing the mentality of managers and public agents, with greater respect for state assets and a reduction in the feeling of impunity.

With these actions, he said, the administrative agents started to provide efficient service to users, as well as the significant evolution of the culture of denunciation, on the part of citizens.

Covid-19: Angola vaccinates over 25,000 people

Luanda- Angola has vaccinated, in the last 24 hours, 25,909 people.

According to the daily bulletin released Friday, the provinces of note are Uíge (4252), Huíla (3299), Cuanza Sul (2898), Luanda (2432) and Moxico (1736).

The cumulative total points to 21 041 615 doses administered, of which 13 480 394 with one dose, 7 372 576 with full doses and 890 500 with booster doses.

UN Secretary-General highlights José Eduardo dos Santos’ qualities

Luanda – The UN secretary-general, António Guterres, on Friday highlighted the qualities of statesman of the former Angolan president, José Eduardo dos Santos.

The former Angolan president died Friday in Spain at the age of 79, of an illness.

In a statement of condolence, Guterres recalled José Eduardo dos Santos as a member of the People Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) that took part in the struggle that led to the country’s independence, and as President of Angola he led the country through the signing of the peace agreement that ended the civil war in 2002.

According to António Guterres, during his mandate, Angola became an important regional and international partner and advocate of multilateralism.

Meanwhile, the members of the Security Council observed on Friday morning a minute of silence in honour for the passing away of the former Angolan President, José Eduardo dos Santos, at the request of Brazil, the country that chairs the Security Council in July.
