Abir Moussi runs for president (defence team)

Tunis: The defence team of Free Destourien Party President Abir Moussi announced that they have been entrusted by the party’s political bureau to represent Moussi as a candidate for the presidential election, and to follow up all matters related to the electoral process, including challenges, correspondence, and communication with the various stakeholders in the electoral process.

The defence team was also tasked with identifying irregularities and infringements likely to compromise the electoral process.

They called in this regard, the Independent High Authority for the Election (ISIE) to respect its legal role and to refrain from interfering in political affairs.

At a press conference held on Monday morning, member of the defence team and of the party’s political bureau Karim Krifa pointed out that “basically, there is no evidence to support the accusations made against Abir Moussi,” denouncing what he considered to be “a lack of responsiveness by the judiciary to all the evidence and testimony in favour
of Moussi.”

Krifa stated that Abir Moussi had been “arbitrarily detained” for 75 days at the women’s prison in Manouba, under a detention order issued on February 1, without, however, being heard.”

The committal order had been issued without specific identity details, as required by law, “which suggests that the committal order is null and void and that the complaint lacks evidence,” he indicated.

Krifa further pointed out that the ISIE had submitted a report on a video other than the one on which its complaint against Abir Moussi is based.

This inspection report, submitted by the ISIE three weeks after the complaint, justified the accusations made against the party president by “political slogans that an opposition party brandishes on all occasions and in all media, without any relation to the ISIE,” he said.

Krifa also warned against the confusion arising from the conditions for candidacy in the presidential election with regard to the need to enjoy civil and political rights, saying that this had noth
ing to do with bulletin no. 3 relating to the criminal record.

He added that as long as a candidate is on the electoral register, he or she enjoys civil and political rights.
