African Union prepares own funds for humanitarian aid

Malabo – The African Union (AU) Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Economy, Josefa Sacko, said Thursday that the organization is preparing to create its own fund to address humanitarian situations in countries on the continent.

The fund, according to the Angolan diplomat at the AU, aims to support farmers and families, victims of possible natural disasters and catastrophes caused by climate change.

“We are working to consolidate a single fund, instead of having several,” the commissioner said in statements to the press in the capital of Equatorial Guinea.

She stressed the fact that the organization had managed to mobilize US$1.5 billion to support African farmers and families, in the face of rising prices of wheat and cooking oil on the international market.

The diplomat considered it fundamental that the AU works with humanitarian agencies in order to achieve what she called “food sovereignty in our continent”.

On Friday (27), Malabo will host the Humanitarian and Donor Summit, an event that will analyse Africa’s current situation in this area.

On Saturday, the AU Conference on Terrorism and Unconstitutional Change of Government in Africa is also scheduled to take place in Malabo.

Saturday’s event was proposed by the Angolan President, João Lourenço, at a summit of the continental organization held last February in Ethiopia, and was accepted by the African leaders.
