Luanda: The 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU), which aims to enhance conflict prevention and resolution mechanisms across Africa, will be the inaugural major international event hosted at the recently opened Luanda Convention Centre next Sunday.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the summit, themed 'Strengthening Conflict Prevention and Resolution Mechanisms in Africa', will gather Heads of State and Government from AU member nations. This significant meeting is set to be preceded by the 26th Extraordinary Session of the AU Executive Council on 29 August, featuring ministers and officials responsible for Foreign Affairs from the member states.
The choice of the Luanda Convention Centre for the summit underscores the venue's readiness to host events of continental importance, shortly after its inauguration by President Joo Louren§o. The centre, spanning approximately 80,000 square metres, is equipped with facilities such as a multifunctional theatre accommodating around 3,000 individuals, an Oval Room for high-level discussions, conference halls, and multifunctional spaces.
The AU summit will serve as a crucial opportunity to evaluate the operational capacity of the Luanda Convention Centre in handling large-scale international events and receiving high-level delegations.
The extraordinary session is anticipated to be a platform for political consultation among member states, focusing on conflict prevention, peace and stability promotion, and the peaceful resolution of crises across the continent. It aims to deepen dialogue among African countries and bolster continental mechanisms for addressing peace and security challenges.
Hosting the summit in Luanda highlights Angola's commitment to the African Union's objectives of promoting peace, security, and stability on the continent, aligning with the aspirations of Agenda 2063. The event marks not only the first significant international test for the Luanda Convention Centre but also emphasizes the Angolan capital's potential as a hub for major political and diplomatic gatherings in Africa.
