Angola and Botswana Finalize New Bilateral Cooperation Agreements

Luanda: Angola and Botswana are in the final stages of negotiating new legal instruments to enhance bilateral cooperation, specifically targeting the agriculture, livestock, tourism, industry, and trade sectors. The announcement was made by Angola's ambassador to Botswana, Sandro de Oliveira, during a technical meeting of the Angola-Botswana Joint Bilateral Commission in Luanda. According to Angola Press News Agency, the technical discussions are set to continue until September at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MIREX) ahead of a ministerial meeting scheduled for Saturday. This meeting is expected to review and potentially sign the agreements negotiated between the two nations. Ambassador de Oliveira highlighted the importance of these discussions, stating that they represent the final opportunity to align on legal instruments to be signed during the upcoming State visit of the President of Botswana to Angola. Ambassador de Oliveira emphasized agriculture and tourism as key areas of interest for Angola wit hin the framework of this bilateral cooperation. He noted Botswana's significant experience in meat production and exports, especially to the European market, which could benefit Angola. Conversely, Botswana has shown interest in Angola's strategic sectors, including the petroleum industry and logistics corridors. The ambassador reported that bilateral relations are experiencing a positive phase, marked by increased political engagement at the highest level. He mentioned that the two Presidents have met twice this year, reflecting the momentum both sides wish to give to their relationship. A State visit by the President of Botswana to Angola is anticipated on 7 or 8 September to further strengthen bilateral cooperation. The Joint Bilateral Commission's technical meeting aims to prepare documentation for the ministerial meeting, continuing efforts to enhance diplomatic and cooperation relations established in 1976. Over the years, Angola and Botswana have fostered relations based on friendship, mutual respec t, solidarity, and a shared commitment to peace and stability in Southern Africa. A significant milestone in the countries' relations was the signing of a General Cooperation Agreement in February 2006, covering agriculture, energy, mining, and tourism. The Joint Bilateral Commission was established as a dialogue and coordination mechanism, monitoring commitments and identifying new cooperation areas. This year, the partners decided to revitalize this mechanism, nearly 20 years after its creation, to relaunch bilateral cooperation and strengthen ties. Among the principal areas of cooperation is the diamond sector, with both countries ranking among the world's leading producers and sharing common interests in developing this strategic industry.
