Bandar Seri Begawan:Angola is actively working to strengthen its diplomatic and economic relationships with Brunei Darussalam, focusing on key sectors such as oil and gas, fertilizer production, mining, and vocational training. This initiative was announced by Angola's non-resident Ambassador to Brunei, Florencio de Almeida, during a ceremony at the Istana Nurul Iman Palace, where he presented his credentials to Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the Angolan ambassador conveyed greetings from President João Lourenço and expressed his satisfaction with the opportunity to represent Angola in Brunei. He emphasized that his accreditation could pave the way for a new phase in the political-diplomatic relationship between the two nations, highlighting the potential for economic partnerships and expertise exchange.
Key areas identified for enhanced cooperation include the oil industry, mining, tourism, and information technology. Additionally, both countries are looking to expand vocational training and provide internships for technical personnel. Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah expressed a strong desire to deepen bilateral cooperation and sent warm greetings to the Angolan leadership. This diplomatic engagement was further reinforced during a working breakfast hosted by Brunei's Second Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dato Erywan, for visiting ambassadors.
Angola and Brunei Darussalam established diplomatic relations on October 18, 2006, at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Since then, their engagement has primarily been through multilateral cooperation, focusing on shared interests in oil and gas production and export. The recent diplomatic moves are part of Angola's efforts to diversify its economic partnerships in Asia and Oceania, aiming to identify investment opportunities and facilitate technology transfer.
In the energy sector, both countries could benefit from exchanging knowledge in hydrocarbon exploration and related technologies. Cooperation might also extend to infrastructure investments and policy-level engagement in international forums. The accreditation of Ambassador Florencio de Almeida is considered a significant step toward strengthening institutional ties and creating new opportunities for economic and technical collaboration between Luanda and Bandar Seri Begawan.
