Abidjan:Angola and the United Arab Emirates have signed a non-binding letter of intent to enhance cooperation in the space sector, focusing on satellite technology, Earth observation, capacity building, and innovation, according to Angola's national space agency GGPEN.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the agreement aims to establish a framework for collaboration in space science and technology, promoting the peaceful use of outer space and supporting the national space programs of both countries.
The document was signed by Zolana Joo, Director-General of Angola's National Space Program Management Office (GGPEN), and Salem Butti Salem Al Qubaisi, Director-General of the UAE Space Agency. This took place during the Africa Space Expo (ASPEX) 2026 in Abidjan, C´te d'Ivoire, with Angola as the guest country of honor.
Angola's Minister of Telecommunications, Information Technologies, and Social Communication, M¡rio Oliveira, was present to witness the signing during his official visit to ASPEX 2026.
The initiative identifies key areas of cooperation, including the exchange of satellite data, development of Earth observation applications, joint satellite development, and collaborative research projects. It also includes plans for sharing expertise in space policy, governance, and regulation, as well as professional training and education.
Human capital development will be a major focus, with potential training programs, technical workshops, and internships aimed at enhancing skills across the space sector. Both agencies may also explore collaborations with universities, research centers, government bodies, and private sector firms, subject to mutual consent and applicable laws.
While the agreement lays the groundwork for cooperation, it does not create legally binding obligations, with specific future projects to be detailed in separate agreements.
