Summit raises over 60 million dollars

The summit this Friday in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, raised a total of US$66 million in humanitarian aid for the continent’s victims of natural disasters and armed conflict.

The amount will be managed by the African Humanitarian Agency, whose offices are located at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

AU data indicate that humanitarian needs in Africa are increasing, mainly due to conflicts and climate shocks.

More than 30 million people are expected to be internally displaced as a result of intercommunity conflicts and food insecurity.

João Lourenço leads working sessions

The Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, led the working sessions of the African Union Summit on Humanitarian Issues and Donors, in the absence of AU Acting President Macky Sall.

The Senegalese President, Macky Sall, had to return to his country due to a tragedy that occurred in a maternity hospital in the capital, Dakar, where a fire resulted in the death of several newborns.

Angola holds one of the vice-presidencies of the Bureau of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union.

Summit on Terrorism and Unconstitutional Changes

In addition to the Summit on Humanitarian Crises, the capital of Equatorial Guinea will host this Saturday another summit on Terrorism and Unconstitutional Changes of Governments in Africa.

The said summit was proposed by President Lourenço, during an ordinary meeting of the continent’s leaders, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The meeting will analyze, among other actions, the impact of this “scourge” on the continent, in order to identify strategies leading to a comprehensive plan.
