Angola reaffirms support for peace and stability in DRC

Luanda – Angola reaffirmed on Friday, during the meeting of the DRC Sanctions Committee 1533 (2004), at the UN headquarters, its support to national and regional efforts for the promotion of peace and stability in the DRC and in the region.

The Permanent Representative of Angola to the UN, Maria de Jesus Ferreira, expressed the country’s readiness to support and encourage cooperation efforts between regional and sub-regional organisations to increase information sharing and joint actions to investigate and combat regional criminal networks involved in the exploitation and illegal trade of natural resources in the DRC.

The diplomat reiterated the country’s commitment to the full implementation of the provisions of resolution 2582 (2021) and reaffirmed full readiness to continue to support and cooperate with the Panel of Experts on DRC under the relevant resolutions on the imposed sanctions regime.

According to the ambassador, as Acting President of the International Conference of the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), Angola is also concerned about the escalation of tension between the DRC and Rwanda and warns of the potential risk of regionalisation of the conflict which could affect any initiative undertaken so far.

During her intervention, she made it known that as a result of his efforts to mediate in the conflict between the DRC and Rwanda, President João Lourenço has secured the release of two captured Rwandan soldiers who were being held by the Congolese authorities and Rwanda, in turn, has released a detained Congolese citizen.
