Luanda – Angola will, as of today, chair the Meeting of Ministers of Maritime Affairs (RMAM) of the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP) for the 2022-2024 biennium, taking over the presidency from Cape Verde, which has ceased its mandate.
The act of handing over the presidency from Cape Verde to Angola took place this Thursday in Luanda, during the 5th Meeting of Ministers for Maritime Affairs of the CPLP, held in the Angolan capital.
Focused on the ocean’s contribution to the sustainable development of the Lusophone Community, the event essentially aimed to share information and exchange experiences on issues linked to combating illegal, “unreported” and “unregulated” fishing.
On receiving the presidency of the RMAM, the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, António Francisco de Assis, said that the Angolan government would continue to work to take better advantage of the existing potential of the CPLP seas, aiming at the welfare of the populations of the respective countries.
On the other hand, the government official warned of the need to establish and strengthen the surveillance and maritime security systems, in order to mitigate and prevent illegal activities predominant in the Community’s oceans, such as smuggling of drugs and human beings, piracy, illegal fishing, among other harmful acts to the seas.
