Angola Takes Position on Path to Organizing Major International Events

Nzeto: Environmentalist Mateus Carlos Filho advised against anarchic burning in the village of Nzeto, Zaire province, this Friday, as it constitutes a practice that endangers endangered species. In a statement to ANGOP, the source condemned this behavior, which also threatens the extinction of animal and plant species that are on the list of protected areas by national and international authorities.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the Biology professor further addressed the consequences of this phenomenon, which is becoming alarming in Zaire province. He noted that burning reduces soil compaction and nutritional properties, in addition to contributing to air pollution. To minimize this situation, Mateus Carlos Filho advocated strengthening environmental education initiatives for the population, as well as implementing measures to mitigate the phenomenon.

On a social level, the environmentalist said that uncontrolled fires are a factor in the accidents that often occur on the country's federal highways, where smoke obscures drivers' visibility and damages energy infrastructure. "Here we are living among the habits and customs of our ancestors, but these habits are seriously damaging the environment and the health of the population," he emphasized, citing the municipalities of Mbanza Kongo, Soyo, and Nzeto as the areas with the most uncontrolled fires in Zaire province.

With an area of 40,130 km2, Zaire province has an estimated population of over 600,000, spread across 11 municipalities.
