Bangkok:Angola will prioritize balance-of-payments financing support and capacity building for member states as it takes on leadership of the International Monetary Fund's African Group 1 Constituency. Pedro Castro e Silva, the incoming Executive Director, made this announcement on Friday.
According to Angola Press News Agency, Castro e Silva outlined these priorities during the annual global meetings in Bangkok, ahead of his two-year term beginning November 2. He takes over from Mozambique's Adriano Ubisse.
Angola plans to assist countries experiencing severe balance-of-payments challenges and advocate for collaborative solutions with the IMF to address high international interest rates and increasing debt-servicing costs across Africa. Castro e Silva emphasized that financial aid should be coupled with administrative capability, ensuring that funding programs align with the practical implementation capacity of each member state rather than adhering to rigid frameworks.
The executive office also reaffirmed its commitment to increasing the representation of African professionals within IMF technical teams and training initiatives to promote long-term economic independence. Through this mandate, Angola aims to ensure that IMF policies remain adaptable to the diverse macroeconomic realities and economic diversification goals of the region.
