Angola to Lead African Constituency at IMF

Bangkok:Angola is set to assume the Executive Directorship of the African Constituency (Group 1) at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a two-year period starting in November. Pedro Castro e Silva, previously the Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Angola (BNA), will represent Angola, succeeding Adriano Ubisse of Mozambique.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the decision was made during a meeting of the governors of the African Constituency (Group 1) at the IMF in Bangkok. BNA Governor Manuel Tiago Dias highlighted Silva's extensive experience in the economic and financial sectors, which includes over 15 years in both public and private roles. Silva's previous leadership positions within Angola's oil and financial sectors, as well as his past roles at the central bank, were noted as a solid foundation for his new responsibilities.

Dias emphasized the commitment of Angola and other member countries to support Silva in making the group more cohesive and influential, ensuring Africa's voice is heard at global economic forums. He also congratulated the outgoing representative for his contributions over the past four years.

The IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings, where these decisions were discussed, focus on global economic challenges and sustainable growth. This year’s meetings in Bangkok, themed "Thailand's New Horizons Empowering People, Building Resilience," are the 82nd edition and highlight issues such as private capital mobilization, job creation, and technological innovation. These meetings rotate locations, with two consecutive editions in the U.S. followed by one in a member country, and are accompanied by annual "Spring Meetings" in Washington.

Angola has been a member of the IMF and World Bank since 1989, and has worked to strengthen its relationship with these entities to foster economic and social growth.
