Luanda:Angola is set to launch its national World Space Week campaign on October 4, with plans to extend educational programming to all 21 provinces. This initiative follows last year's events, which reached over 22,000 residents.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the weeklong event, running until October 10, aligns with the global theme "Rocket Revolution." Angolan officials have introduced a domestic sub-theme that emphasizes space technology as a catalyst for development, connectivity, and education.
Vangilya Filipe, deputy director-general for technical and scientific affairs at the National Space Program Management Office (GGPEN), announced the details during a press conference in Luanda. In 2025, GGPEN organized 86 activities across 19 provinces, attracting 22,456 participants, including more than 14,000 children and teenagers.
For the 2026 edition, the organizers plan to expand outreach with simultaneous workshops, training sessions, and interactive programs at schools, universities, and business incubators nationwide. Edna Caposso, deputy director-general for administrative and financial affairs, stated that the event will skip a centralized opening ceremony in favor of concurrent regional activities starting October 4. The week will conclude with a formal closing event on October 9 at the Luanda Science Park.
A significant addition this year is the inaugural "Rocket Revolution Angola 2026" National School Rocket Competition. Registration opened on September 23 and will continue until September 25. Participating students will receive remote instruction on rocket design and launch mechanics to enhance interest in STEM fields.
GGPEN officials also provided updates on Angola's broader space infrastructure. Over 40 municipalities now receive services via the Angosat-2 satellite. The government's "Conect Angola" program has identified over 46 new installation sites across 19 provinces, and 60 provincial managers completed training earlier this summer to better manage space technology projects locally.
