Angolan fighter wins gold medal in African Judo Championship

Luanda – Angolan athlete Edmilson Pedro won the gold medal of the African Judo Championship being held in Algeria, in the category of -66kg after beating Morocco’s Abderrahmane Boushita.

In women’s 57kg category, Angolan Jeovana Freire, who was fighting for the bronze medal was beaten by South Africa’s Jamine Martin, while the other Angolan representative, Diassonema Neide (-57kg), lost in the second eliminatory against the South African Jamine Martin.

In the -52kg, Andreza António beat the Tunisian Mariem Jmaour in the first elimination round.

Edmilson Pedro, three-time national champion (2021, 2020, and 2019), became the first athlete to win the African Champion title, adding to three the number of gold medals for Angola in African Championships, now in its 43rd edition.

Angola is participating in the continental event with a team composed of 17 judo fighters , nine male and eight female.

Men – Edmilson Pedro (- 66 Kg), António Candeeiro, Acácio Cassule (-73), Wilson Afonso, Gildo Domingos, Adriano Tchissenge (-81), Sílvio Jorge (-90), Piter da Silva and Dilson Toneto (+100).

Female – Andresa António (52kg), Jeovana Peris, Neide Diassonema, Joana Tchapopia (57), Priscila Marta (63), Maria Miangue, Luísa José (-70) and Cristany Rodrigues (+70).
