Angolan Health Minister Reports on Cabo Ledo Accident Survivor Care

Luanda: Angolan Health Minister S­lvia Lutucuta stated on Monday that the survivors of the road accident in Cabo Ledo, which occurred on Sunday, are stable but still require care. Twelve people lost their lives, and 32 others sustained injuries when a Yutong brand bus, belonging to the Macon company, veered off National Road (EN)100/South in the municipality of Cabo Ledo, Icolo e Bengo province, and overturned with 42 occupants.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the accident happened around 5:00 am as the bus was traveling from Lubango in Hu­la province. During a visit to the victims at the Pedro Maria Tonha Pedal© Hospital, Minister Lutucuta informed the press that, except for one patient in a coma, the others are stable but still need ongoing care. "Here at the hospital complex, in the ICU, we have six patients who require intensive care. We have one in very serious condition, a young man who suffered an axial trauma as a result of the impact in the accident and is in a coma," she elaborated.

The minister detailed that all bus occupants experienced trauma of varying severity and complexity, with several suffering from serious head, chest, abdominal, and extremity injuries, including complex fractures. The surgical process commenced on Sunday, and more than 15 surgeries have been conducted, with further procedures anticipated in the coming days.

Regarding the deceased, Minister Lutucuta emphasized that administrative and forensic matters are being managed by the health sector, respective provincial governments, and responsible entities of the Ministry of the Interior. A statement from the Ministry of Health (Minsa) indicated that eight of the injured were taken to the General Pedro Tonha Pedal© Hospital Complex, while others were admitted to the Prenda, Josina Machel, and Luanda General hospitals.
