Luanda:The Angolan Media Regulatory Authority (ERCA) has intensified its efforts to tackle disinformation and hate speech through a training session focusing on media literacy and information integrity. Held in Luanda, the session was aimed at media professionals, content creators, technicians, and students, underscoring the importance of fact-checking and preventing misleading information.
According to Angola Press News Agency, Lady Mukeba, the director of the Office of Institutional Communication and Press of the Luanda Provincial Government, addressed the attendees, emphasizing the critical need for a strong sense of social responsibility in media usage. She highlighted the role of new digital tools, such as Artificial Intelligence, in improving information quality while maintaining authenticity. Mukeba stressed that while technology facilitates faster communication, it is ethics that underpin credibility.
The Chair of ERCA's Board of Directors, Adelino de Almeida, underscored the necessity of empowering citizens to discern truthful information from falsehoods by employing fundamental journalistic questions. He pointed out the rapid spread of unverified content on social media as a significant challenge and advocated for well-verified information dissemination through traditional media, despite its slower pace. De Almeida called for greater recognition of journalism as a profession requiring specific skills and training, and he emphasized education over campaigns against social media, promoting responsible tool usage for societal benefit.
