Luanda: A fuel depot used to store petrol intended for smuggling into the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was dismantled by the National Police in Soyo Municipality, Angolan northern Zaire Province, over the weekend.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the Zaire police spokesperson, Lus Bernardo, stated that the dismantling of the depot, located near one of the waterways, was a result of a micro-operation carried out by the National Police. During the police operation, 39,000 litres of petrol were seized in Kimpondo neighbourhood. The fuel was due to be transported to the neighbouring country through the river border.
Lus Bernardo further mentioned that, during the period under review, the National Police, in coordination with the Criminal Investigation Service (SIC), seized a tanker truck carrying 35,000 litres of petrol in Tuko neighbourhood, Soyo, as well as four three-wheeled motorcycles transporting 6,500 litres of fuel destined for smuggling into the DRC.
Three Angolan nationals were arrested in connection with the offences, including two security guards working at a petrol station. The suspects and the seized products will be referred to the Public Prosecution Service for the appropriate legal proceedings.
