Angolan President briefed on situation in east DRC

Luanda – The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, was informed on Monday of the resurgence of the armed group M23 in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), aggravating the situation of insecurity in the east part of the neighbouring country.

The information was provided to the press by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the DRC, Christophe Apala Ten’ Apala, at the end of an audience granted to him by the Angolan Head of State.

Christophe Apala Ten’ Apala said he had delivered a message from the DRC President, Félix Tshisekedi, to his Angolan counterpart, Joao Lourenço.

The envoy of the DRC Foreign Minister stressed that the aim of the meeting was to share with the Acting president of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) the new scenario with the resurgence of the M23, which was declared extinct four years ago.

Christophe Ten’ Apala said he found the same willingness of President Lourenço to help overcome the situation in the DRC, despite the engagement of the DRC’s armed forces in the fight against those forces, fearing that the battle would last a long time.

He explained that the Congolese armed forces have been fighting for a long time against the ADF forces, with links to the Islamic State, which have caused desolation, deaths and the looting of resources in the east of the DRC.

He stressed domestic and regional efforts to end the insecurity situation which has implications for security and the social fabric.

Angola and DRC share about 2,500 kilometres of border.
