Angolan President Emphasizes Stronger Ties with Nigeria

Luanda:President Joo Louren§o has conveyed a message to Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, affirming Angola's dedication to enhancing the longstanding friendship, solidarity, and cooperation between the two countries.

According to Angola Press News Agency, this message was delivered in conjunction with Nigeria's 66th Independence Day on October 1. President Louren§o extended his congratulations to the Nigerian people, government, and head of state, while encouraging further bilateral collaboration.

The relationship between Angola and Nigeria spans 50 years, rooted in Nigeria's support for Angola's national liberation movement before Angola's independence in 1975. Their cooperation was formalized through important agreements, including an Air Services Agreement in 1976, a Trade Agreement in 1977, and the establishment of the Joint Bilateral Commission in 1979.

Over the decades, the partnership between Luanda and Abuja has grown to encompass various sectors beyond hydrocarbons, a field where both nations are major African energy producers and OPEC members. The collaboration now includes agribusiness, the blue economy, science, technology, defense, and regional security.

To commemorate 50 years of bilateral relations, officials have announced plans to publish a joint documentary chronicling the history of Angola-Nigeria ties, scheduled for release in 2027.
