Angolan President Visits Brazil to Strengthen Bilateral Cooperation

Brasilia: Angolan president Joo Louren§o arrived in Brazil on Thursday for a state visit aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation, with a pivotal meeting scheduled the following day with his counterpart, Lus In¡cio Lula da Silva. The visit signifies a reciprocal gesture following the Brazilian President's trip to Angola in August 2023.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the two leaders are expected to review the current state of bilateral cooperation, focusing on key developmental areas, particularly the agricultural sector. The visit will include the signing of agreements and a visit to the Itamaraty Palace, the headquarters of the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A lunch in honor of Louren§o, hosted by Lula da Silva, is also part of the itinerary.

The Angolan President's agenda includes a meeting with a representative group of the Brazilian business community, underscoring the economic ties between the two nations. Angola stands as one of Brazil's main trading partners in Africa, with Brazilian exports reaching 493 million US dollars in 2024. Key exports include frozen beef, pork, poultry, and sugar, while Angolan imports primarily consist of crude oil and oil by-products.

The collaboration between Angola and Brazil has been expanding since the signing of seven cooperation agreements and technical memoranda in areas such as agriculture, tourism, health, and education during the Brazilian president's visit to Angola in 2023. In November 2024, the Angola-Brazil Agri-Business Forum in Luanda further solidified these ties with agreements to enhance agricultural partnerships.

The Angolan government prioritizes agricultural programs to ensure food security and economic growth, finding an ideal partner in Brazil, which has faced similar challenges. Delegations from Brazil, including business community members, have been fostering increased contact with Angolan authorities to promote agriculture and livestock investments and enhance private sector interactions.

Recently, Brazil's Minister of Agriculture and Farming, Carlos F¡varo, emphasized Brazil's commitment to supporting Angola in achieving autonomy in agricultural production for food self-sufficiency.

The minister led a delegation from his country's agribusiness sector made up of around 30 businesspeople, which, in addition to Luanda, made technical visits to the provinces of Malanje and Cuanza-Norte with representatives of the Angolan private sector to discuss forms of financing.
