Angola’s Agriculture Sector Offers New Opportunities for Youth

Luanda:Agriculture in Angola is emerging as a promising career path for young people, presenting opportunities for employment, entrepreneurship, and income generation, according to economist Fernando Chimboto.

According to Angola Press News Agency, Chimboto emphasized the growing significance of agribusiness as the government prioritizes increasing domestic production and reducing reliance on imported essential food products. The economist highlighted that young Angolans possess the necessary technical skills and energy to drive this transformation, contingent upon the establishment of a supportive business environment in rural areas.

Chimboto pointed to a 7.1% growth in national agricultural production during the 2025/2026 season as evidence of the sector's potential to significantly contribute to the structural transformation of Angola's economy. He argued that agriculture should be seen not just as a subsistence activity but as a strategic sector for economic diversification, job creation, and reducing dependency on external food supplies.

The economist stressed the need for concrete improvements in rural infrastructure, including access to financing, mechanization, irrigation, technical assistance, and transportation, to ensure profitability for producers. He also advocated for stronger connections between agricultural production and the domestic processing industry to add value and strengthen global production chains.

Chimboto highlighted the main challenge of maintaining and building upon the 7.1% growth, calling for clear targets, focused investment, and rigorous monitoring to evaluate the impact of agricultural seasons. He reiterated that Angola's economic diversification hinges on the development of its rural sector, emphasizing that a productive agriculture and livestock sector would enhance the state's ability to generate wealth and create a more sustainable economy.
