Severe Storms Displace Over 1,250 Residents in Eastern Angola

Cazombo:More than 1,250 residents have been left vulnerable after violent winds and torrential rainfall tore through the municipality of Cazombo, in the eastern province of Moxico Leste, destroying roughly 350 homes.

According to Angola Press News Agency, Moxico Leste governor Crispiniano dos Santos confirmed the preliminary figures on Sunday following an inspection tour of the hardest-hit communities. Local authorities reported that 60 residences were completely demolished, while another 290 sustained heavy damages.

Provincial and municipal disaster response teams, including the Civil Protection and Fire Services alongside the Department of Social Action, Family, and Gender Equality, are continuing structural assessments to establish final casualty and damage figures. Governor dos Santos announced that emergency distribution of corrugated zinc roofing sheets has already begun to help displaced families rebuild their roofs. Local authorities are actively mobilizing additional resources to accelerate reconstruction efforts.

In the wake of the disaster, officials have issued urgent safety warnings urging residents to avoid building homes in high-risk zones, such as areas prone to rising water tables, steep ravines, or directly beneath large trees. To mitigate future weather risks, the provincial government has deployed a specialized contractor to install lightning rods across municipal hubs, prioritizing high-traffic public facilities including schools and hospitals.
