Luanda:The commencement of commercial production at Angola's Luele diamond project is poised to significantly enhance national diamond output and bolster the country's standing in the global market, as stated by President Joao Lourenço.
According to Angola Press News Agency, President Lourenço, during his State of the Nation address to the National Assembly, detailed the government's initiatives to formalize and structure the mining sector. This involves transforming semi-industrial cooperatives into industrial-scale operations, restructuring existing concessions, and opening new areas to competitive bidding.
To increase domestic value, Angola has established the Saurimo Diamond Development Hub, developed local lapidary facilities, and inaugurated the country's first microdiamond laboratory. Additionally, state-run ENDIAMA Mining and the Brilhante Foundation have relocated their headquarters to Dundo, anchoring operations within the primary diamond-producing region.
The President also emphasized broader mineral diversification efforts, highlighting the resumption of gold production post-independence via the Buco Zau project in Cabinda, along with initiatives in Chicuamone and Chipindo in Huíla. The Ornamental Rock Valorization Center in Huíla has been created to enhance processing capabilities and economic returns from local stone.
Angola's government is intensifying efforts against illegal mining, improving supply-chain traceability, quality control, and commercial mechanisms. President Lourenço affirmed Angola's dedication to environmental stewardship and adherence to international compliance standards, including the Kimberley Process.
As part of ongoing reforms, work is advancing on the launch of the Angolan Diamond Exchange, aimed at enhancing market transparency, competitiveness, and securing higher valuations for Angolan diamonds globally.
