Angola Expands Electricity Generation Capacity to 6,322 MW

Luanda:Angola has achieved a notable milestone in its electricity generation capabilities, reaching an installed capacity of 6,322 megawatts (MW). This development signifies substantial progress in the country's efforts to meet both present and future energy demands, as highlighted by President Joao Lourenço during the opening of the final legislative session of the fifth parliamentary term.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the President emphasized that the country's electricity generation capacity was previously 4,659 MW in 2017. Significant advancements have been made since then, addressing longstanding challenges such as production deficits, dependency on fossil fuels, fragmented grids, and inequalities in access to essential services.

The President credited this progress to several key initiatives, including the completion and upgrading of major hydroelectric projects, the rehabilitation of existing infrastructure, the expansion of solar power generation, and the ongoing modernization of transmission and distribution systems. He noted a structural transformation in Angola's energy mix, with the operation of 75 power plants 13 hydroelectric, 44 thermal, nine solar, and nine hybrid facilities.

Furthermore, Joao Lourenço provided details on the distribution of the installed capacity, which includes 3,231 MW from hydroelectric power, 1,125 MW from thermal power, 357 MW from solar power, and 36 MW from hybrid generation.
