Luanda:Pension funds in Angola managed assets totaling 1.33 trillion kwanzas during the second half of 2026, a 9% increase from the same period the previous year, as announced by insurance regulators on Friday.
According to Angola Press News Agency, Aldemiro Gon§alves, an administrator at the Angolan Regulation and Supervision Insurance Agency (ARSEG), revealed these figures at the 3rd Pension Fund Forum in Luanda. The assets saw a modest 2% quarter-over-quarter increase, surpassing the 1.25 trillion kwanzas recorded in 2025.
Gon§alves emphasized the broad growth in Angola's pension industry, highlighting increases in both total assets and the number of active funds in the market. The industry currently includes slightly more than 63,000 active participants nationwide.
The market is predominantly made up of closed pension funds, which are restricted to specific employers or professional groups. Out of 46 registered funds, 35 are closed, commanding 96.63% of the sector's total managed assets, while the 11 open pension funds represent just 3.37% of the total.
The number of pension funds increased from 41 last year to 46 in 2026, with expectations of further growth as five to six more funds await official publication in the Di¡rio da Repºblica.
Regulators also noted that pension funds paid out approximately 135.7 billion kwanzas in benefits in 2025, marking a nearly 15% increase from the previous year. Old-age retirement pensions made up 88% of these payouts.
The annual forum, organized by the financial magazine Economia e Mercado, gathered domestic and international experts to discuss strategies for enhancing retirement savings, boosting financial literacy, and creating investment options tailored to local workers.
